Scripture Memorization Challenge – October 2016

It’s six days into the month and I’m giving myself 30 more to memorize ten Bible passages. Yes 10!

Why Memorize Scripture?

Information comes in handy. I’m a Barista at a local Starbucks, and from time to time a customer asks me a random, but in-depth question about the different components of a coffee’s flavor profile. Or they may ask what is the benefit to one brewing method over another method. These questions are quite technical and require special knowledge. Me spending time in my Coffee Master training, preparing for the tough questions of coffee (which are light compared to the tough questions of Christianity), helps me through these selling opportunities.

So it is with Scripture. If I am to be someone knowledgable about Scripture, wouldn’t I strive to make it something to commit to memory.

My One Month Scripture Memorization Challenge

I’ve been captivated by Personal Growth techniques and thought that is would be incredibly enjoyable to study out and memorize ten fresh passages. The month long period is more for accountability than for anything else.

The Scriptures that I have chosen to memorize are solely based off of the recommendation that David Mathis posted on desiringGod.org in his article Ten Passages for Pastors to Memorize Cold.

The ministry at Desiring God has shaped me more than any one thing outside of Scripture so, here’s my ode to them. I’m taking their recommendation!

The List of Ten Bible Passages

  1. Psalms 23
  2. 1 Corinthians 11:23–26
